Defective chemistry through the eyes of nuclear spins: unlocking the detective potential of NMR
School of Earth and Environmental Sciences
Seoul National University
In mathematics and physics, many chemical structures can often be elegantly described in terms of their periodicity and/or symmetry. In chemistry and materials science, however, the interesting properties of many solid materials are determined by their non-periodic, i.e., defective, nature. NMR spectroscopy, which relies on the interaction of nuclear spins with their immediate chemical environments, provides an excellent probe into the structure and dynamics of these defects, which are often challenging to investigate by other structural techniques.
In this talk, I will highlight some of our recent investigations in materials chemistry involving solid-state NMR spectroscopy as the primary tool. Topics covered include: structure and electronic doping of 2-dimensional metal-halide perovskites[1,2], surface functionalization and interface phenomena in metal-halide perovskites[3,4], and ion dynamics in Mg-ion battery cathode material Mg3Bi2[5,6].
