Interactions between organic molecules and semiconductor surfaces have garnered significant attention due to their potential to enhance our understanding of organic functionalization, thereby imparting desirable properties to semiconductor surfaces. To successfully form a hybrid organic-semiconductor system, it is essential to understand the adsorption structures and reaction behaviors of various organic molecules on semiconductor surfaces at the molecular level.
Various synthetic ways used in organic chemistry can be employed to functionalize the (100) semiconductor surface because its dimers can react with organic molecules via analogous reactions such as Lewis acid-base and cycloaddition reactions. However, these reactions have been relatively less studied on a Ge(100) surface compared to a Si(100) surface. While discovering new reactions on the Ge(100) surface is challenging, it is highly valuable as it can offer novel opportunities for organic functionalization.
In this presentation, recent studies on the unprecedented ring-opening reactions of five-membered cyclic molecules, tetrahydrofuran and tetrahydrothiophene, on a Ge(100) surface will be addressed, which were conducted using a combination of high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.
