Electrochemical Biosensors Using Catalytic Reactions

Ultrasensitive biomolecular detection requires high signal amplification, which can be achieved through chemical amplification that relies on rapid and selective catalytic reactions. Our research group has been actively developing novel catalytic reactions, such as electrochemical redox-cycling reactions, enzymatic reactions, and nanocatalytic reactions, for this purpose. While the catalytic reactions used in biomolecular detection are similar to those used in chemical synthesis, they differ in certain respects. For example, the catalytic reactions for biomolecular detection should not occur in the absence of catalysts. In this presentation, I will introduce the fundamental chemistry behind these developed catalytic reactions and discuss their applications in electrochemical biosensors.
