Jiajia Dong was born in China and earned his BA from Xiamen University in 2000. He completed his PhD in organic chemistry under Prof. Biao Jiang at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC) in 2006. Prior to becoming a postdoctoral associate in Prof. K. Barry Sharpless’s group at The Scripps Research Institute (2009–2015), he worked as a senior scientific researcher at Egret Pharma in Shanghai. During his postdoctoral tenure, he discovered the Sulfur(VI) Fluoride Exchange (SuFEx) reaction with Prof. Sharpless. He is currently a professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where his research focuses on SuFEx click chemistry. His group systematically explores the reactivity of S(VI)-F reagents—such as sulfuryl fluoride (SO₂F₂), fluorosulfonyl isocyanate (FSO₂NCO), fluorosulfonyl azide (FSO₂N₃), and related transfer reagents—opening new avenues in chemical biology, medicinal chemistry, and materials science. Among his achievements is the development of a safe method for synthesizing fluorosulfonyl azide, a diazo transfer reagent that enables high-throughput azide compound synthesis from primary amines, with broad potential applications in pharmaceutical research. Prof. Dong was awarded the 2nd National Innovation Award (China) and the 2020 WuXi AppTec Life Sciences and Chemistry Scholar Award.
