Computational Design of Water-Resistant Adhesives Mimicking the Mussel Foot Proteins

Mussel foot proteins (MFPs) adhere to virtually any surfaces under wet conditions. Little is known about the molecular origin of the underwater adhesion of MFP onto a hydrophobic surface. By using molecular dynamics simulation, we investigate the structure, dynamics, and energy of the wet adhesion of MFP onto a hydrophobic graphite. The MFP anchors on the surface by contacting three L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) groups. By using the density functional theory (DFT), we designed 170 DOPA derivatives for possible waterproof adhesives. By using the electrostatic potential calculated by using DFT as a quantum descriptor of molecular structure, we propose a novel quantitative structure-property relationship for the adhesion energies of the DOPA derivatives.1
