The rational design of multifunctional electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for advancing sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies. In this study, we integrated density functional theory (DFT) calculations with experimental investigations to elucidate how hierarchical surface and support architectures govern catalytic performance. Theoretical analysis revealed a markedly enhanced density of states near the Fermi level, conferring improved electrical conductivity. The Gibbs free energy for hydrogen adsorption approached zero, signifying optimal HER activity, while OER pathways exhibited low overpotentials and well-balanced energy barriers. Guided by these predictions, we synthesized and systematically characterized the catalyst, which demonstrated low overpotentials for both HER and OER, favorable Tafel slopes, and outstanding long-term stability. Structural and compositional analyses confirmed the targeted design features, including uniform surface morphology and robust support integration. This work highlights the synergistic interplay between computational modeling and experimental validation, underscoring the critical role of electronic structure tuning and intermediate adsorption energetics in the development of high-performance multifunctional electrocatalysts.
