Development and Mechanistic Understanding of Transition Metal-Catalyzed C-C Bond Forming Reactions

Kwangmin Shin

Department of Chemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

The development of new transition metal catalysis for the construction of carbon-carbon bonds has a great impact on broad research fields such as organic synthesis, medicinal and materials chemistry. Here, I present my research effort in recent years toward the establishment of site-selective and/or stereoselective C-C bond forming reactions catalyzed by transition metal complexes. The first part of this talk will describe the development of site-selective Ir(III)-, Rh(III)- and Ru(II)-catalyzed oxidative C-H arylation reactions.[1-3] Mechanistic investigations of these arylation reactions, including isolation, CV and EPR studies of the key reaction intermediates and DFT calculations, will be discussed in detail. In the second part of this talk, the development of copper-hydride catalyzed stereoselective allylation of aldehydes with unactivated 1,3-dienes will be discussed.[4] The effect of kinetic control (slow addition of aldehyde) on the chemo- and stereoselectivity of this allylation reaction will be explained.
